Äwlep

Äwlep (b. 2000, Nukus, Qaraqalpaqstan) is a visual artist currently based in Tashkent. Working primarily with acrylic airbrushing on canvas, she captures the quiet warmth and heavy, invisible memories embedded in daily life. Her paintings bring a hyper-focused, soft-edged intimacy to everyday subjects.

Utilizing the distinct, dreamlike textures of airbrushing, she explores memory and belonging through mundane objects, local iconography, and personal stories. Her practice connects intimate human presence, local domesticity, and shared cultural imagery, balancing a specific post-Soviet sentimentality with sincere, sometimes ironic social observation. The result is a deeply personal emotional map of contemporary Qaraqalpaqstan.

Qarataw is the name of a mountain range in Qaraqalpaqstan, but in my hometown of Nukus, it is better known as the label on a bottle.

“0.5” is an ongoing series about my hometown, my childhood, and the liquid architecture of where I belong.
